Ledger Not Recognised by Computer: Complete Fix Guide (2026)

Ledger Not Recognised by Computer: Complete Fix Guide (2026)

Quick Checklist First

Before going through full solutions, check these basics:

  • ✅ Is the Ledger powered on? (It should show a screen when connected)
  • ✅ Is the correct app open on the Ledger? (For Ethereum, the Ethereum app must be open)
  • ✅ Is Ledger Live up to date? (Check for updates in the app)
  • ✅ Are you connecting via USB, not just charging?

Fix 1: Try a Different USB Cable

This is the most common cause. Many USB-C cables are charge-only — they carry power but not data. Ledger devices require a data cable.

  • Use the cable included in the Ledger box
  • If you’ve lost it, any USB-C cable labelled “USB 3.0” or “data + charge” will work
  • Avoid cheap phone charger cables

Fix 2: Try a Different USB Port

USB hubs, USB extenders, and some front-panel ports on PCs don’t reliably pass data. Try:

  • A different port on the same computer
  • A rear USB port on a desktop (these are directly on the motherboard)
  • A different computer entirely, to rule out computer-specific issues

Fix 3: Windows — Install the Device Driver

Windows sometimes fails to recognise Ledger without the correct driver.

  • Connect your Ledger
  • Open Device Manager (search for it in the Start menu)
  • Look for an Unknown Device or a device with a warning icon
  • Right-click → Update driver → Search automatically

Alternatively, uninstall and reinstall Ledger Live — the installer includes the necessary drivers.

Fix 4: macOS — Allow the Connection

macOS Ventura and later may prompt you to approve a new USB device.

  • Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security
  • Look for a message about a blocked device
  • Click Allow

Also check: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk AccessLedger Live may need permission on some macOS versions.

Fix 5: Reinstall Ledger Live

A corrupted Ledger Live installation can cause detection failures.

  • Uninstall Ledger Live completely (including app data if prompted)
  • Download the latest version from ledger.com/ledger-live
  • Install fresh
  • Connect your Ledger and try again

Fix 6: Update Ledger Firmware

If your device is running old firmware, it may not be fully compatible with the current Ledger Live version.

  • Open Ledger Live
  • Go to My Ledger tab
  • If a firmware update is available, install it
  • If the device isn’t detected in Ledger Live, try the Ledger Recovery Check mode (hold the button while connecting for Nano S Plus; instructions in the Ledger Live onboarding)

Fix 7: Check Security Software

Antivirus or firewall software occasionally blocks Ledger Live from communicating with the device.

  • Temporarily disable your antivirus and try again
  • If it works with antivirus disabled, add Ledger Live as an exception
  • Common culprits: Avast, McAfee, Kaspersky

Fix 8: Use a Different Browser (for MetaMask/Web3)

If you’re trying to connect Ledger to MetaMask or a web3 site (not Ledger Live):

  • Use Chrome or Brave — these have the best WebHID/WebUSB support
  • Firefox has limited hardware wallet support
  • Make sure the Ethereum app is open on the Ledger device
  • Check that MetaMask has the Ledger extension installed if using WebHID

Fix 9: Ledger in Bootloader Mode

If Ledger Live shows the device but can’t communicate properly, try bootloader mode:

Nano X / Nano S Plus:

  • Unplug the device
  • Hold the left button while plugging back in
  • The device enters bootloader mode (shows a boot screen)
  • Open Ledger Live — it should detect it in repair mode

This allows firmware reinstallation even if the device seems stuck.

Still Not Working? Contact Ledger Support

If none of the above resolves the issue:

  • Go to support.ledger.com
  • Chat support is available and generally responsive
  • If the device is defective and under warranty (2 years), Ledger will replace it

Frequently Asked Questions

My Ledger shows on screen but Ledger Live says “No device detected” — why?

The most common causes: wrong USB cable, correct app not open on the device, or a Ledger Live update needed. Check all three.

My Ledger worked yesterday but not today — what changed?

Possible causes: a Windows/macOS update that affected USB drivers, a Ledger Live update that needs a firmware update to match, or a cable going bad. Start with a different cable and different port.

Can I use Ledger without Ledger Live?

For MetaMask and web3 use, yes — you connect directly through the browser. But for firmware updates and initial setup, Ledger Live is required.

My Ledger screen is blank when connected — is it broken?

If the screen is completely blank (no logo, no PIN prompt), the device may not be receiving power — check the cable and port. If it powers on but shows only a lock/PIN screen, that’s normal — enter your PIN.
