What Is Optimism?
Optimism is an Ethereum Layer 2 network that uses Optimistic Rollup technology — it batches transactions off-chain and periodically submits compressed proofs to Ethereum mainnet. Like Arbitrum, it inherits Ethereum’s security while dramatically reducing transaction costs.
Optimism is also the foundation of the Superchain — a growing collection of OP Stack chains (including Base, Zora, and Mode) that share the same underlying technology. Understanding Optimism means understanding a growing ecosystem.
Key facts:
- Full EVM compatibility — any Ethereum DApp can deploy on Optimism
- Gas token is ETH (same as Ethereum mainnet)
- Block time: ~2 seconds
- Typical fees: 10–50x cheaper than Ethereum mainnet
Optimism Network Settings
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Network Name | Optimism |
| New RPC URL | https://mainnet.optimism.io |
| Chain ID | 10 |
| Currency Symbol | ETH |
| Block Explorer URL | https://optimistic.etherscan.io |
Method 1: Add Optimism via Chainlist (Fastest)
Chainlist pulls verified network settings and adds them to MetaMask in a single click.
Steps:
- Make sure MetaMask is unlocked
- Search for “Optimism”
- Review the details in the MetaMask confirmation popup
Optimism is now available in your MetaMask network selector.
Method 2: Add Optimism Manually
Desktop:
- Open MetaMask and click the network dropdown at the top
- Fill in:
– Network name: Optimism
– New RPC URL: https://mainnet.optimism.io
– Chain ID: 10
– Currency symbol: ETH
– Block explorer: https://optimistic.etherscan.io
Mobile:
- Enter the same settings
After adding, MetaMask switches to Optimism automatically.
How to Bridge to Optimism
To transact on Optimism, you need ETH on Optimism (not Ethereum mainnet ETH). Bridging moves your ETH from Ethereum to Optimism.
Option 1: Official Optimism Gateway
- Connect MetaMask (make sure you’re on Ethereum Mainnet)
- Select ETH and enter the amount
- Confirm in MetaMask
- Wait 1–5 minutes for ETH to arrive on Optimism
Withdrawal note: Moving funds from Optimism back to Ethereum mainnet via the official bridge takes 7 days (the fraud proof challenge window). For faster withdrawals, use third-party bridges.
Option 2: Exchange Withdrawal to Optimism
Several exchanges support direct withdrawal to Optimism:
- On your exchange, initiate an ETH withdrawal
- Paste your MetaMask address
- Confirm
This bypasses the Ethereum bridge fee and is often the simplest approach.
Option 3: Third-Party Bridges (Faster)
For speed and no 7-day withdrawal delay:
Gas Fees: Optimism vs Ethereum Mainnet
| Action | Ethereum Mainnet | Optimism |
|---|---|---|
| ETH transfer | $2–$15 | $0.01–$0.20 |
| Token swap | $10–$60 | $0.05–$0.80 |
| DeFi deposit | $20–$100 | $0.10–$2.00 |
| NFT mint | $20–$100 | $0.50–$5.00 |
Fees vary with ETH price and network congestion.
Optimism fees are paid in ETH, just in much smaller amounts than Ethereum mainnet.
The OP Governance Token
The OP token is Optimism’s governance token. It’s separate from the ETH you use for gas.
What OP does:
- Governance voting on OP Collective decisions (grants, protocol upgrades)
- Retroactive public goods funding mechanism
- Staking in some protocols
What OP does NOT do:
- You don’t need OP to use Optimism
- OP is not required for gas
- Holding OP doesn’t reduce your fees
To add OP token to MetaMask:
0x4200000000000000000000000000000000000042- Switch to Optimism network first, then add the token
Top DApps on Optimism
| DApp | Category |
|---|---|
| Uniswap V3 | DEX |
| Aave V3 | Lending |
| Synthetix | Derivatives |
| Velodrome | Native Optimism DEX |
| Kwenta | Perpetuals |
| Sonne Finance | Lending |
| Beethoven X | DEX/AMM |
Optimism vs Arbitrum: Quick Comparison
Both are major Ethereum L2s. Here’s how they compare for MetaMask users:
| Feature | Optimism | Arbitrum One |
|---|---|---|
| Chain ID | 10 | 42161 |
| Gas token | ETH | ETH |
| Governance token | OP | ARB |
| Technology | Optimistic Rollup (OP Stack) | Optimistic Rollup (Nitro) |
| TVL ranking | Top 3 L2 | Top 2 L2 |
| Official bridge withdrawal | 7 days | 7 days |
| Ecosystem | Superchain / Base ecosystem | Native Arbitrum protocols |
Both are excellent for most users. Arbitrum currently has more native DeFi protocols; Optimism has the growing Superchain ecosystem.
Common Issues and Fixes
RPC not responding
Alternative RPC URLs for Optimism:
https://optimism-rpc.publicnode.comhttps://1rpc.io/ophttps://optimism.llamarpc.comTokens not showing after bridging
Add them manually. Find the token contract on optimistic.etherscan.io, then use MetaMask’s Import tokens feature.
Wrong network — transactions failing
Make sure MetaMask is set to Optimism (Chain ID 10) when using Optimism DApps. If a DApp requests a network switch, approve it.
Sent ETH to wrong network
If you sent Ethereum mainnet ETH to your address but expected it on Optimism, the ETH is on Ethereum mainnet — check your balance there. Bridging and transferring are two different operations.
FAQ
Do I need the OP token to use Optimism?
No. ETH is the only token you need to pay gas on Optimism. OP is a governance token and optional.
Is Optimism part of the Ethereum ecosystem?
Yes. Optimism is an Ethereum Layer 2 — it inherits Ethereum’s security and posts its transaction data to Ethereum. It’s often described as “Ethereum with lower fees.”
What is Base, and is it different from Optimism?
Base is a separate network built on the OP Stack (the same technology as Optimism), created by Coinbase. They’re different networks with different Chain IDs — Base is Chain ID 8453. Both are part of the “Superchain” vision but are independent networks.
How is Optimism different from Polygon?
Polygon is a separate sidechain (and now also has a ZK rollup), while Optimism is a rollup that inherits Ethereum’s security. Optimism transactions are “settled” to Ethereum; Polygon transactions are settled to Polygon’s own validators. For security, Optimism is closer to Ethereum.
Can I use my Ethereum NFTs on Optimism?
Not directly — NFTs on Ethereum mainnet don’t automatically appear on Optimism. Some projects bridge or redeploy their NFTs to Optimism. Check the specific project’s documentation.
